6TH ANNUAL DANCE
This year's NITCS's 6th Annual Dance was off the hook! Tejano Sound from Lansing, Michigan rocked the house. As usual, Turner's Club was gracious enough to let the NITCS hold their event in their Sport's Complex.
What a nite! A new Executive Board was elected, volunteers were awarded with plaques of service, and members were awarded for being members for five years. People won prizes and most important everyone had a great time. There was a moment of reflection and a time to share appreciation for our US Troops. Everyone was in attendance from Armando E. of Chizzme.Com to JV of Tejano Beat Y Mas to Linda Chapa LaVia, State Representative of the 83rd District of Illinois to Candidate Tom Weisner for Mayor to Joel Castillo of Unibanc Mortgage to Big Daddy Tejano of Big Daddy Productions to Mary Lou Chapa of Chapa Realty to Michael Garica, Sam Gonzales and Benito Chapa of the Aurora Latin American Club to Alex, Martin and the rest of the members of LULAC to all the members and non-members of the NITCS. Everyone who supports Tejano Culture was in attendance and the NITCS did not let anyone down. As if the party at Turner's was not enough, the after set took place at the Aurora Latin American Club.
Maria Castillo, former President of the NITCS, and Sara Escareno, Former Vice President of the NITCS, were recognized for their valiant efforts to grow the membership of the NITCS and to expand the funds for the Scholarship Fund. Maria and Sara efforts will not ever be replaced but only learned from, so the next President, David Barbosa, and Vice-President, Apolinar Gonzalez, Jr., will continue to expand those efforts and take the NITCS to even a higher level. The NITCS would like to take this moment and thank the following for their efforts to keep Tejano Cultural Alive:
Jose (Founder and 1st President) and Maria Pasillas (Founder and 1st Secretary) for starting the Northern Illinois Tejano Cultural Society. Because of Jose and Maria, we are who we are today. Jose tried his hardest to pave the path where the NITCS would be recognized as a strong Hispanic non-profit organization in today's society and receive the respect as Tejanos. Maria made sure that the NITCS had structure and organization.
Israel Castillo, Jr. (Co-Founder and 1st Vice-President) for establishing the By-Laws that the NTICS and their members follow today. Israel assisted the NTICS as being charter and recognized as a Non-Profit Organization by the state of Illinois. Israel efforts continue today, as he works through his son Joel Castillo, giving him the direction the NITCS should be going - UP and Up!
Apolinar Gonzalez, Jr. (Co-Founder and 1st Sergeant of Arms and now our new Vice-President) for keeping order and peace at all the NITCS meetings and events. Apolinar strong roots from the Valle, San Benito, Texas, gave the NITCS the importance of keeping the Tejano Culture alive and well here in the Midwest. Showing our children of how important it is to know your culture as a Tejano and as an American.
Elida Ordiz (Co-Founder and 1st Treasurer and 2nd President) for keeping the NITCS accounting records in order. In making sure that funds were always available for every event, every scholarship and every person in need. Elida dedicated herself to the organization one hundred and fifty percent. Even through her own sickness she still made sure that funds would always be available through different types of fund-raisers. Elida showed her strength as she became a leader as the NITCS's second President. Elida was able to take the NITCS to the next level and show other Hispanic organization that the NITCS is an organization to recognize. Because Elida was persistent in getting recognition for the NITCS, Eldia started process of getting the first Tejano website in the Midwest. Elida was able to get donated time and efforts from others to have a NITCS website - www.nitcs.org - Now, today we have one of the best Tejano Sites not only in the Midwest but in the country.
Sylvia Fuentes (Co-Founder and Chairperson of Scholarships) for giving the NITCS their Mission Statement to follow. Sylvia wanted to make sure that the NTICS started a separate bank account exclusively for the Scholarship Fund. Now, the NITCS is giving over five scholarship a year and the contirbution continues to grow.
Irma Dominguez (Second Secretary) for continuing to keep domination and order at all NITCS meetings and events. Irma took the bull by the horns and computerized all the documentation. Irma also created many of the programs that were put together for the NITCS events.
Maria Castillo (Second Vice-President and Third President) for all her time and dedication to making the organization what it is today. Maria took the role as the Vice-President and used her talents to push and push members and non-members to continue to support the NITCS and become members. Maria always made sure that each event was sold out. She dedicated her time to going door to door for ticket sales for all our events. As President, Maria was able to finally connect us with other Hispanic Organizations - Our Lady of Guadalupe Fiesta Mexicana Topeka Kansas, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, LULAC, Latin American Club, Puerto Rican Council, Latino Coalition and Hispanic Council of Aurora. Scholarship funds were raised to higher amounts and the numbers of scholarship were raised.
Sara Escareno (Third Vice-President) for taking control of many events. Sara was able to give the NTICS their first place of meeting at Provena Hospital. She made sure the NITCS would always have a warm place to conduct their monthly meetings. Often, Sara would also involve her family to assist in many of the events. Sara's husband, Armando E., volunteered many times to DJ many of the NITCS events. Sara was responsible for many of the Fay's Bar B Que Events in which a profit was always made to contribute to the scholarship fund.
In addition, the following people have been helping, assisting, and volunteering since the existence of the NITCS in taking the Northern Illinois Tejano Cultural Society to being a very successful non-profit Hispanic Organization in the Midwest:
